Upper Gastrointestinal and Metabolic Surgery


Under the directorship of Professor Enders Ng (CUHK) & Dr. Simon Wong (HA), the Division of Upper Gastrointestinal and Metabolic Surgery (Team II) is world renowned for its research in the surgical treatment of a great variety of upper gastrointestinal tract diseases, endocrine disorders and metabolic disease associate with obesity. In conjunct with the Endoscopy Centre, we also lead in therapeutic endoscopy particularly on advanced ERCP & EUS technique and the management of upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage and early GI tumour.


The Division of Upper Gastrointestinal and Metabolic Surgery (Team II) provide elective and emergency general surgery service for the New Territory East Cluster (NTEC) population in Hong Kong. We also provide subspecialty support for Hong Kong as a Territory referral centre of Upper GI surgery and advance therapeutic endoscopy. We are one of the recognized sub-speciality training centre on Upper GI Surgery by the Hong Kong College of Surgeons. Moreover, our Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery centre provide multi-disciplinary team service for patients with severe obesity and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. In addition, our Endocrine unit also provide surgical management of various endocrine organ disorders include neuroendocrine tumour, thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal disease. In collaboration with our Gastroenterologist, our Endoscopy Centre provide 24 hours service of all types of endoscopic management of GI disease which included advance therapeutic upper endoscopy (OGD), Colonoscopy, Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS).

The Team has established itself as a leading centre in the international arena in its research areas & our publications feature regularly in world leading journals. Not only are our publications widely cited around the world, their findings have made major impact in clinical practice:

  1. Pioneered endoscopic therapy in various upper GI bleeding
    • Injection therapy of bleeding peptic ulcers - this treatment modality has since become the standard in the management of ulcer bleeding.
    • Refinement of endoscopic techniques - the use of sandostatin has been an invaluable adjunct to endoscopic treatment of bleeding oesophageal varices.
    • Clinical trials in the use of antibiotics alone against Helicobacter pylori associated peptic ulcers without acid suppression made major impact in the medical treatment of ulcer disease.
  2. Pioneer advance endoscopic therapy for GI disease in Hong Kong
    • Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for GI early cancer
    • Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) for achalasia
    • EUS-guided gallbladder drainage for acute cholecystitis
  3. Pioneered surgical & endoscopic therapy for obesity & diabetes in Hong Kong
    • Introduction of gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgery
    • Introduction of endoscopic bariatric therapy - intragastric balloon & endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty
  4. Advancement of Minimal Invasive treatment for Endocrine Disease
    • CT-guided RFA in treatment of benign adrenal neoplasms.
    • Endoscopic / Robotic / Transoral thyroidectomy for thyroid neoplasm

Apart from clinical research, our Team provide Continuing Medical Education through organization of local, regional & international workshops.

  • Since 1985, our International Therapeutic Endoscopy Workshop attracts hundreds of participants from around the world each year
  • Workshops on laparoscopic surgery leading to the propagation of the technique to the Asian-Pacific region

    Stepping into year 2020, we endeavour to continue our record in clinical and laboratory research. In addition, we will continue our central role in education in the Asian-Pacific region.
