Currency & Payment Method
Hong Kong's unit of currency is the Hong Kong dollar (HK$) which is tied to the US dollar at an exchange rate of about HK$7.8 to US$1. Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops. Some stores also accept mobile payments like Apple Pay, Google Pay, Alipay, and WeChat Pay. Some shops and restaurants in Hong Kong that only accept cash or Octopus cards, so it is recommended that you visit a currency exchange to obtain enough cash before venturing out. Alternatively, you can purchase or rent an Octopus card, or download the tourist version of the Octopus app to your mobile phone. Octopus can be used to make payments on all public transport with just a simple tap.
Electricity Supply
The Standard electrical voltage in Hong Kong is AC 220 volts (50Hz). The British three-pin plug and socket-outlet system is commonly used in Hong Kong.
Opening Hours
Banks are open from Monday to Friday between 9am to 5pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 12:30pm, are closed on Sundays and public holidays. Offices generally are open from 9am to 5/6pm on weekdays. Retail shops generally are open every day from 10am to 7pm. However, in busy retail areas like Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui stay open until 9:30 or even later. Most restaurants stay open until 9:30 pm.
Getting Around
Hong Kong is geographically compact and the public transport system is efficient, relatively inexpensive and user friendly. The Airport Express links Hong Kong International Airport directly to Hong Kong's central business district and buses connect the airport with most of the city. The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) and public buses allow easy access throughout the territories. Hong Kong' taxis are inexpensive with a HK$29 (the red urban taxi), HK$25.5 (the green New Territories taxi) and HK$24 (the blue Lantau taxi) flag fall. And for those looking for a mode of travel that has been used for decades, there are the Star Ferries, Hong Kong Island's street trams and the venerable Peak Tram. Road signs in Hong Kong are bilingual in both English and Chinese.
Telecommunications
Most of the world's mobile telecommunications systems operate in Hong Kong, including GSM 900/1800, UMTS, HSPA+, DC-HSPA+, LTE-A. Check if your service provider has a roaming agreement with a Hong Kong operator, and be sure to pay attention to the roaming rates. You may get a Discover Hong Kong Tourist SIM card as soon as you arrive. This prepaid card lasts either 7 or 15 days and offers free local call, free Wi-Fi and bundles of mobile data.
Free Wi-Fi services are widespread in Hong Kong. In particular, there are many Wi-Fi.HK hotspots widely available across the city in locations, which offer wireless internet connection completely free or free for a period of time.
Visa Requirement
In general, all visitors to Hong Kong must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months. Nationals of about 170 countries and territories may visit Hong Kong without a visa/entry permit for a period ranging from 7 days to 180 days. You may refer to the website of Immigration Department of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) for more information on visa/entry permit requirements.
